Certification Definitions

Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC)

The ability to interpret/ transliterate both between American Sign Language and spoken or written English and between a sign code for English and spoken or written English.

Certificate of Interpretation / Certificate of Transliteration (CI / CT)

Indicates competence in interpretation between American Sign Language and spoken English.

Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L)

Specialty Certificate: Legal Interpreting

Interpretation Certificate / Transliteration Certificate (IC / TC)

The ability to interpret between American Sign Language and spoken or written English.

Transliteration Certificate (TC)

The ability to transliterate between a sign code for English and spoken or written English.

National Associate of the Deaf (NAD) Certifications - Level IV (Advanced)

Excellent voice-to-sign skills and above average sign-to-voice skills, demonstrates interpreting skill necessary for just about all situations.

National Interpreter Certification (NIC)

General, Advanced, and Master levels of Certification include general knowledge of the field of interpreting, ethical decision making, interpreting and transliterating skills.
